NEW BULGARIAN UNIVERSITY

The New Bulgarian University was established on 18 September 1991 by a decision of the Grand National Assembly. The New Bulgarian University received institutional accreditation from the National Evaluation and Accreditation Service for the maximum period in four consecutive accreditations – in 2001, 2006, 2012 and 2019. In 2004 New Bulgarian University was recognized as the largest distance education university in Europe. Bachelor programmes in English

Bachelor’s programmes in English are taught at the New Bulgarian University in Sofia, with specialisations in Anthropology, Networking Technologies, Politics and Society, Applied Foreign Languages for Administration and Management (in English and a second foreign language), Psychology and Philosophy.

The Anthropology Programme (Anthropology)-

offers systematic training in the field of socio-cultural anthropology. What is culture? What are the similarities and differences between different cultures around the world? How are societies organized and how does their organization change over time? What are the relationships between individuals and institutions? What is the role of kinship, religion, politics, etc. in people’s lives? The anthropology program discusses these and other topics based on modern interactive learning methods.

Most of the courses are practice-oriented. Theoretical knowledge is combined with fieldwork and other forms of practical training outside the classroom. The teachers are established scholars with significant theoretical contributions and research experience in the field of anthropology and other social sciences.

The semester tuition fee for the anthropology specialization is 1350 BGN.

The duration of study in the specialty is 8 semesters (4 years). If desired, the student can continue his/her studies in a postgraduate program of the university.

NETWORKING TECHNOLOGIES (Networking Technologies)

The education in the programme during the first two years covers general education, classroom lecture courses such as – Programming (C++), Computer Systems, Object Programming (C++), Network Basics, Data Structures, Operating Systems, Local and Global Networks, Virtualization Systems, Databases and SQL, etc.; extracurricular forms of learning – programming programs, databases, network algorithms, individual projects. In the third and fourth years the education is organized in specialized courses of the program and extracurricular forms of study. From the third year, the programme offers two modules leading to professional qualifications.

Graduates receive the necessary knowledge for the design of computer networks, information systems and databases.

Admission to the university is based on a topic to be developed by the prospective student in English.

POLITICS AND SOCIETY(Politics and Society)

Politics and society face problems in a modern environment with modern interactive teaching methods focusing on practical application. The first two years of study cover practical and general lecture courses in politics, society, governance and international relations related to disciplines such as sociology, social anthropology and economics. In the third and fourth years, the educational process is organised around more narrow profiles of practice-oriented courses and educational formats.

The programme is conducted exclusively in English. The speakers are well-known scholars from academics who have also lectured in Europe and the United States, as well as real practitioners such as former and current prime ministers, ministers, party leaders, ambassadors, political advisors and military leaders.

Graduates of the programme can work in the media and public relations (PR), as specialists in international programmes and projects, consultants in international governmental and non-governmental institutions in foreign ministries, international organisations, public administration; political parties; research centres and universities.

APPLIED FOREIGN LANGUAGES FOR ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT (IN ENGLISH AND A SECOND LANGUAGE) (Applied Foreign Languages for Administration and Management (in English and a second foreign language)

Scientific title: philologist, translator with English and [relevant foreign] language.

The training is theoretical and practical, which includes practical and hands-on training – creating and working with a bilingual parallel corpus of specialized texts, internships in administrative institutions and translation agencies.

Graduates acquire knowledge as experts in two foreign languages, are familiar with the structure of the languages studied, the language map of Europe, EU language and terminology resources, the European institutions, law, economics, governance, economic geography and culture of the EU and skills for their application (translation, editing, reporting, analysis and document synthesis) in various subject areas: European finance and administration, law, human resources, etc.

Graduates of the programme are: specialists in European structures – translators, reference, consultants in intercultural relations and others.

PSYCHOLOGY

The training programme is run according to the EuroPsy rules (the requirements of the European Federation of Psychological Associations for professional training of psychologists).

The practical training includes supervised research in university laboratories (Neuroscience Laboratory, Experimental Psychology Laboratory, Usability Research Laboratory, Cognitive Development Laboratory and Cognitive Robotics Laboratory), participation in the annual international summer school of cognitive sciences, as well as internships in clinics, schools, kindergartens and companies.

The programme provides exchange opportunities for students with universities in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia and Germany.

Graduates acquire knowledge in the main areas of modern psychology and the basic methods for the study of human cognition, individual and group behaviour and interpersonal relationships, as well as practical skills for designing and conducting empirical research, data analysis, use of various tools for psychological diagnosis, provision of psychological services in various areas of social practice.

Psychology graduates can continue their education to obtain a Master’s degree or continue their career as psychologists in schools, clinics, social services and more.
