From anatomy lessons, to the white apron and the wide smile.

Manos Stavropoulos is one of the very good friends of SB-ACADEMY. Today he will present us a different perspective on studying medicine in Bulgaria. Dr. Stavropoulos Here you go

I suppose many people imagine their life in ten years looking like this: a white coat, a stethoscope in their pocket, a sign with their name starting with Dr. and a big smile trying to hide their accumulated fatigue. I started there too.

This year I also managed to cross the finish line, although after that it seems like a new race begins. It’s certainly not an easy start, but following medicine is an adventure of a lifetime – to keep overcoming and constantly surprising yourself. Because there is no impossible goal, no insufficient desire.

If I had to choose a few words to sum up my six years of study, they would be: love for this science, challenge, motivation, passion, books, lots of joy and LOTS of coffee. But when you are in a foreign country as in my case in Bulgaria – both the effort and the joy of success are second to none.

I can list many things I love about this profession, and first and foremost I would put diversity, whether it’s in everyday life or in choosing a career field. There is no day like the last. Every day when the alarm clock goes off that never means the same decisions, tasks and patients for the rest of the day. The only common thread each day is the priority, and in this case that is the patient.

But the most exciting memories remain of the studies themselves, the first contact with the subject matter and the mystery of what lies ahead. When the 350 first-year English-speaking students gathered for the first time, our anatomy professor asked us the following question:

“Why do you want to study medicine?”

He asked us to write our reasons briefly on a piece of paper and hand it to him at the end of the lecture. He promised to read our answers and report back to us the next day. It was quite an interesting approach. It made us think once again about why we were in that particular room. The next day he read us different answers from different students, such as: “To feel like God in white”, “Because it is very prestigious”, “Because my parents wanted it”, etc.

Our initial answers changed at the end of our studies. I believe that at that time 90% of our answers would have been: “Because I see it as my recognition and I want to help people.” After 6 years of difficulties, sleeplessness, studying, stress, fear of whether we will make it, the answer above comes to you spontaneously.

So choose a profession that will make you excited and interested every day. A profession that allows you to express yourself and makes you happy.

I would like to thank SB-ACADEMY for being by my side all these years and for the friendship we created, for the support they offered me during my studies and for the wonderful moments we spent together and will continue to have in the future, even from afar.
